Google’s June 2026 Android security bulletin patches 124 vulnerabilities, including CVE-2025-48595, a zero-day that is already under active exploitation. If your organization manages Android devices and has not yet applied the June patch, you are currently running devices with a known-exploited flaw.
What is CVE-2025-48595?
- Component: Android Framework
- Affected versions: Android 14, 15, and 16
- Type: Integer overflow
- Impact: Elevation of privilege (EoP)
- Attacker requirements: Local access to the device; no user interaction required
A local attacker who can run code on the device can exploit this integer overflow to gain code execution at a higher privilege level. Once elevated, they can potentially bypass application sandboxing, access sensitive data, or install additional malicious components.
Why this matters now
- Google has confirmed active exploitation in the wild.
- Any delay in patching leaves your fleet exposed to attacks that are already happening.
- Because this is an EoP in the Framework, it can be chained with other bugs or used to strengthen existing footholds on compromised devices.
Immediate actions for defenders
1. Prioritize patch deployment via MDM
If you operate an enterprise MDM (or EMM/UEM) platform:
- Push the June 2026 Android security update as a priority deployment.
- Do not wait for your standard monthly maintenance window.
Concretely:
- Create a high-priority update policy targeting all supported Android 14–16 devices.
- Require installation and reboot as soon as feasible, with minimal deferral.
- Monitor compliance and follow up on devices that fail to update or report errors.
2. Identify and track vulnerable devices
- Generate a report of all managed devices running Android 14, 15, or 16 that have not yet installed the June 2026 security update.
- Treat these devices as high risk until patched.
- Where possible, restrict access to sensitive corporate resources from unpatched devices.
3. Communicate with users
- Notify users that an urgent Android security update is being deployed.
- Explain that a reboot may be required and that the update addresses an actively exploited vulnerability.
- Encourage users to leave devices powered on and connected (Wi‑Fi and power) to receive and complete the update.
4. Harden against local attackers
Because exploitation requires local access:
- Reinforce policies against device sharing and unauthorized physical access.
- Ensure screen lock and device encryption policies are enforced on all managed devices.
- Review and tighten policies around sideloading and developer options where possible.
5. Validate patch status
After rollout:
- Use your MDM’s inventory to confirm that the June 2026 security patch level is present on all in-scope devices.
- Investigate any devices that remain on older patch levels or repeatedly fail updates.
Summary
CVE-2025-48595 is a high-impact, actively exploited elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in the Android Framework affecting Android 14–16. Organizations managing Android devices should immediately push the June 2026 Android security update via MDM, bypassing normal maintenance windows, and closely track patch compliance across their fleet.
